The Oak Ridge Boys was founded in 1945 as the Oak Ridge Quartet. They became very popular during the 1950s. They remained a gospel-oriented group until the late 70s, when they changed their image and concentrated more on country and pop music. The band's original lineup consisted of lead singer Duane Allen, tenor Joe Bonsall, baritone William Lee Golden, and bass singer Richard Sterban.
The Oak Ridge boys are one of the longest-running groups in country music, although they started out as a gospel quartet before gradually modernizing their style and moving into secular country-pop. Yet even at the height of their popularity in the late '70s and early '80s, when they were big enough and could easily cross over to the pop charts - their sound always remained deeply rooted in country gospel harmony.
Artist Biography - The Oak Ridge Boys
The Oak Ridge Boys made their first recordings in 1947 with a lineup of Fowler, Lon "Deacon" Freeman, Curly Kinsey, and Johnny New. William Lee Golden joined as the group's baritone vocalist in 1964 and when Gatlin retired to become a full-time minister two years later, the group hired ex-Southernairs singer Duane Allen as his replacement on lead vocals. Sterban joined the group in 1972.
The group's line-up remained consistant for the next 15 years. In 1977, The Oak Ridge Boys switched from gospel to country and released their album "Ya'll Come Back Saloon". The group's 1981 album, "Fancy Free," contained the hugely successful song "Elvira". To date it remains the group's most widely known song. It was a #1 country chart hit, as well as a #5 pop hit. "Bobbie Sue," their seventh album was released on February 10, 1982. The title song was another huge hit, reaching #1 on the country chart and #12 on the pop chart.
In 1985, "Step On Out" was released. It was the groups last album before the departure of William Lee Golden in 1986. He was replaced by the band's guitarist, Steve Sanders, who remained with the group until Golden returned in the mid-90's.
