Until the release of the documentary- Standing in the Shadows of Motown , the members of the band were not widely known to the public for their contributions to the Motown sound. This was despite the fact that they had played the music in many Motown hits, as studio musicians were not credited on Motown releases until Marvin Gaye came up with What's Going On in 1971. The Funk Brothers have also shared top stages with Van Dyke on some of his recordings, although they were billed as "Earl Van Duke & the Soul Brothers."
The Funk brothers have used a number of innovative techniques while playing for the backing tracks for many Motown songs. Their most Motown records feature two drummers instead of one, either playing together or overdubbing one another. For Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" they used three drummers. In a number of songs the band has utilized instrumentation and percussion which were quite unusual in soul music recording. Like in the song "It's Growing" featured Earl Van Dyke playing a toy piano for the song's introduction, they used snow chains as percussion on Martha & the Vandellas' "Nowhere to Run", and a custom oscillator was built to create the synthesizer sounds used to accent Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Reflections."
The Funk brothers are the Motown's unsung heroes, despite have played more number one records than, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley combined. However, times have changed, many summers and cold winds have come and gone, and even many from the old act have left for the resting place. Still, the music lives on, the remains of the old act and few new ones have become the Funk Brothers. Watch them perform in a show, book your tickets now online.

The Funk Brothers have played on many major Motown hits such as "My Guy", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Baby Love", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "The Tears of a Clown", and "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave". The early members of this ensemble included bandleader Joe Hunter and Earl Van Dyke (piano); James Jamerson (bass guitar); William "Benny" Benjamin and Richard "Pistol" Allen (drums); Robert White, Eddie Willis, and Joe Messina (guitar); Jack Ashford (tambourine, percussion, vibes, marimba); Jack Brokensha (vibes, marimba); and Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion). In 1964 Hunter, so he was replaced on keyboards by Johnny Griffith and Van Dyke took over as bandleader. Around the same time Uriel Jones joined the band as a third drummer. In 1967, guitarists Dennis Coffey and Melvin "Wah-Wah Watson" Ragin, who introduced the wah-wah pedal sound that defined Motown's psychedelic soul records, joined the band. Benny Benjamin died the next year, and Bob Babbitt replaced him. He has been featured on many recording dates. The Funk Brothers were a racially integrated band. Most members were black; Joe Messina, Jack Brokensha, Bob Babbitt, and Dennis Coffey, were white.
