The Flaming Lips was born in Oklahoma City in 1983. The band at that time comprised of Wayne Coyne, his brother Mark and Michael Ivins. Initially the band saw many drummers come and go till the time Richard English joined the band in 1984. The same year the band came out with their first eponymous EP ‘The Flaming Lips'. After the release of the EP, Mark Coyne quit the band. Wayne took over the responsibility of the vocal duties after which the band's maiden full-length album ‘Hear It Is' was released.

After releasing two more albums 1987's Oh My Gawd!!!, and 1989's Telepathic Surgery English quit the band and was replaced by Nathan Roberts. To further solidify the lineup the band roped in Jonathan Donahue. With the new lineup the band released the album ‘In a Priest Driven Ambulance'. The soaring popularity of the band attracted the attention of Warner Bros. Records, and the band signed a recording deal with the company. The band came out with their first major label album ‘Hit to Death in the Future Head' in 1992. After the release of the album, the band saw a change in the lineup, Donahue and Roberts quit the band and were replaced by Ronald Jones and Steven Drozd.

A year later, in 1993 the band came out with the album ‘Transmissions from the Satellite Heart' which became a big hit. In 1995, the band released the highly anticipated album ‘Clouds Taste Metallic' however; the album was not able to replicate the commercial success of its predecessor. After the release of the album, the band embarked on an extensive tour, which resulted in Ronald Jones, quitting the band towards the end of 1996. The exit of Jones and a universal discontentment with standard "rock" music directed the trio to redefine the direction of the band. In 1997 the band came out with its experimental album ‘Zaireeka'. In 1998 the band released the album ‘The Soft Bulletin' which elevated the band into an altogether different level. The band continued to tour and in 2002 released the album ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots'. The track ‘Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon' fetched a Grammy Award in 2002.

The award-winning band still continues to tour extensively and play different and popular fests.
