Artist Biography - The Fiery Furnaces
|
The band signed a recording deal with Rough Trade label in 2002, and a year later came out with their maiden release ‘Gallowsbird's Bark'. The album that had garage blues elements was highly appreciated by the critics as well as music lovers.
Matthew is the composer and also handles studio instrumentation, while Eleanor looks after the majority of the vocal duties. Drummer Andy Knowles and bassist Toshi Yano joined just before the beginning of the 2004 tour.
The band rocked at the ‘All Tomorrow's Parties' festival in Camber Sands, England and the tour was a huge success. After the tour in the summer of 2000, the band came out with their second effort ‘Blueberry Boat', which was also well accepted. Termed as a multi-layered concept album, the main track ‘Quay Cur' with its changing sound from dirty, gurgling organ to slide-guitar-fueled ditties, pulsing electronic beats to abstract lullaby within a few minutes, showcased the band's variety in songwriting. The track was highly appreciated but it also got its share of criticism, many critics felt that the album seemed unfocused, due to constant switching of music. As most of the songs from the album were too long, it did not get much radio play. So, the band rectified it by coming out with the single ‘Single Again'. In the beginning of 2005, the band came out with a compilation album ‘EP' which had two new songs. The same year the band came out with yet another album ‘Rehearsing My Choir' which was once again experimental in nature. The concept album had Friedbergers' grandmother, Olga Sarantos, telling the story of her life. The album got mixed reviews. After the release of the album, the band hit the road in support of it and Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh and Bob D'Amico replaced Toshi Yano and Andy Knowles respectively for the tour. In 2006, the band came out with yet another album ‘Bitter Tea'. In 2006 itself the band embarked on a highly successful tour supported by experimental rock band, Deerhoof. In 2007, the band signed a new recording deal with Thrill Jockey and released their album ‘Widow City'.
