The Boys of the Lough is considered as one of the longest-surviving Celtic bands since its inception in 1960s. Forest Hill Bar in Edinburgh has been a unique learning center for country folk singers and renowned instrumentalists since 1960s. This learning center is now known as "Sandy Bell's". It was a place where artists like fiddler Aly Bain have played together with guitarist Mike Whelans and singer Dick Gaughan in various sessions. Aly Bain belonged to the Shetland Islands. He was an recognized master of the Shetland style of playing. In Ireland, Cathal McConnell was a famous famous artist and championship winner who hailed from a family of flute players in County Fermanagh in Ireland. Tommy Gunn and Robin Morton have been Cathal's musical partners in concerts and sessions. Destiny made these two halves met at Falkirk folk festival in Scotland and they resulted into the formation of "The Boys of the Lough".
Artist Biography - The Boys Of The Lough
Boys of the Lough released their self-entitled debut album in 1972 which had a contribution of Aly Bain on fiddle, Cathal McConnell on flute, Dick Gaughan on vocals and guitar along with Robin Morton on flute. After some time, Gaughan quited the band in order to go for a solo career. He was replaced by Dave Richardson who belonged to Corbridge, Northumberland) and had an expert hand on mandolin. For next six albums, this line up remained unchanged. Other than a mandolin player, Dave Richardson was also a talented writer of new material. This band got great response and renown by playing tightly-kit ensemble instrumentals and the occasional songs which had equal parts of traditional sources from Scotland and Ireland. This band has toured the world specially America. They are mainly seen as a Scottish equivalent of "The Chieftains". They have toured USA over sixty time till date. They are regarded as the first Scottish instrumental folk group to become professional
They had an extensive touring in 1967 which was their first tour which attained them a great renown and warn response from traditional music lovers and generated a huge fan base over all the country. 1978-79 tour was announced by the band as their final tour. But after a silent gap of two years, The Boys of the Lough came back to music industry with their new work "Regrouped" in 1980. This reunion lacked Robin Morton as he left to found a Scottish folk music label called Temple Records. The line up for "Regrouped" had introduced three new members, including John Coackley on fiddle. John played for the band for next 12 years. Other new member was Christy O'Leary who played uilleann pipes. The band lost lost one of its energetic and talented member, Tich Richardson in 1983 when he died in a car accident. The band performed at Carnegie Hall in 1992.
Making year 1993 , again silent, they came back up "The Day Dawn " in 1994. Before this, album, John Coackley was gone. At this time, the group was renowned and famous enough so that it could call on guests to appear for a single album. Chris Newman and Kathryn Tickell who were English and soloists in their own right, were invited to sit in with the group on tours and albums. Aly Bain marked its absence from Lonesome Blues and Dancing Shoes in 2002. He left the band to play with other influential musicians like Phil Cunningham. After "The day dawn", the band released many albums. Few notables ones are "The West Of Ireland" in 1999, "Lonesome Blues and Dancing Shoes" in 2002, along with the latest one "Twenty" launched in 2005.
Currently, The Boys of the Lough are on constant touring around the country including California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia etc.
