The Avett Brothers were originally formed as a project on the side by brothers Seth and Scott Avett, who were originally part of a band called Nemo. Scott began to experiment acoustically with country and bluegrass and soon began adding touches of rock and punk into the blend. Seth and Nemo guitarist John Twomey also began to help out and soon a new band with a new sound was formed. It was initially called Nemo Downstairs and they soon had enough material to put out their first solo LP. Soon after, Nemo broke up and the brothers set off to discover and explore the sounds of their new band.

In 2002, Bob Crawford was added to the line up and the trio released an album called Country Was, which they followed up with some touring. The new sound of bluegrass, rock and souped up country was finding a ready audience everywhere they went. The band also ducked any attempt to label their sound under any specific genre, preferring instead that the audience take away what they would from the music.
The band played to a completely sold out concert on New Year's Eve and are slated to tour with alternative country outfit BR5-49 sometime this year.
