Tesla formed in Sacramento in 1984. While recording their first album, Mechanical Resonance, in 1986, their manager convinced them that their original name, City Kid, would not sell. After looking back at the content of some of the songs on the record City Kid became Tesla.
Tesla entered the music scene of the ‘80s playing with glam rock bands like David Lee Roth, Def Leppard, and Poison. The group resented the classification as heavy metal, though. The group described their sound as hard rock with a blues feel and no machines-meaning that none of their songs had synthesizers.
Telsa also did not wear the makeup or wear the tight leather pants associated with heavy metal. The group, wearing T-shirts and jeans, waited three years before releasing their next album. The Great Radio Controversy was released in 1989 and contains the group's first signature song, "Love Song". The band released a live album and the studio album Psychotic Supper, before taking a break in 1994.
The guitarist Tommy Skeoch needed the time to recover from a drug addiction and the rest of the group took the opportunity to try out individual projects. In 2000, Tesla reunited. They released Replugged Live, triumphantly marking their return.

Skeoch left the group six years later, this time to spend time with his family and their new baby boy. Telsa replaced him with Dave Rude without any lingering negative feelings and the group continued to tour. There latest releases, A Peace of Time and Real to Reel, sparked a world tour in 2007.
In 2008 the group will travel around the world, this time to promote their third DVD release, Comin' Atcha Live1 2008. The tour starts in Europe in June, but will make its way stateside in July and will go well into the fall.
