The Temptations have become the signature sound for the era known as Motown. The group began harmonizing in 1960 and has sung throughout the past five decades, changing their style with the times and becoming perhaps the longest lasting quintet in the history of R&B. Back in the 1950s in Birmingham, Alabama Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Kel Osbourne, and Wiley Waller formed the Cavaliers. Waller would leave the group and the remaining trio would travel first to Cleveland and then to Detroit. In Detroit, as the Primes, they competed for attention with a number of groups, including the Distants, a group from Montgomery, Alabama led by Otis Williams. The two groups ended up combining when the Primes disbanded and The Distants needed to more singers for his group. Kendricks and Paul Williams joined Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Elbridge Bryant in 1960 to become the Temptations, the African-American quintet that would sell concert tickets for generations.
The new group along with a team of songwriters and producers at Ben Gordy's label tried to craft the group into a sensation on the R&B and pop charts. The group could sell tickets to crowds of R&B fans, but struggled to make an impression on the larger audiences despite their well-crafted choreography, suits, and vocals.
The group would become known as the "Hitless Temptations" with each failure to climb up the charts. The pressure led to the replacement of Bryant with David Ruffin. With a little help from Bobby Rogers, the Temptations had their first hit in 1964, The Way You Do the Things You Do. Soon after Smokey Robinson and Miracles bandmate Ronnie White helped the group and David Ruffin breakout with a number one hit, My Girl. Mor hits followed with talented song writers supporting the group. Now selling tickets to the mainstream was becoming less and less of a challenge. By 1968, the Temptations were internationally known.

Tension began to develop as David Ruffin, who was featured as the lead singer on most of the hits, soon began to make more and more demands. Eventually, in 1968, he was replaced by David Edwards of the Contours. The end of the Sixties marked the first time the group truly began to incorporate other genres into their act. In the Seventies, the Temptations tickets continued to sell on huge tours and albums kept flying off the shelf as the group became psychedelic soul.
The rest of the decade included highs, Papa was a Rolling Stone, and lows, a dry spell that began after they left Motown. A return to Motown helped spark interest in the Temptations again. Part of the reason for the spark was a reunion that brought back members that had left the group years before. Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin returned and the group dominated the charts with six hit singles and sold Temptations tickets for a tour with seven Temptations instead of the normal five. Ruffin, Kendrick, Edwards, Franklin, Richard Street, Otis Williams, and Glenn Leonard delighted fans, but stressed internally. Kendricks voice had deteriorated thanks to chain smoking and Ruffin was unreliable thanks to his drug habit.
The 1980s were tumultuous as the Temptations experimented with using a little bit of rock and the lineup again proved to be a carousal ride. Hits were few and far between. The 1990s were much of the same, though the group, this time with Otis Williams, Ron Tyson, Theo Peoples, Harry McGilberry, and Terry Weeks, performed at the half time show of Super Bowl XXXII to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Motown. That group went onto release Phoenix Rising, the first million-selling album in years, which led to the Temptations again being at least a minor force on tour with concert tickets.
The latest Temptations lineup has Joe Herndon, Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks, Otis Wilson, and Bruce Williamson. The group left the Motown label and is now under New Door.
