There is no white artist that has sung R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie. Her big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she started out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American.
Teena Marie was born Mary Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California, and raised in an African- American community in Venice. Teena Marie was glued to music and entertainment from an early age. She even appeared on show, "The Beverly Hillbillies" and a few commercials. She also sang at weddings.
This singer/songwriter was in her early twenties, when she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor, Rick James. With his patronage and support she released her debut album in 1979, "Wild and Peaceful." That LP, boasted her hit duet with James, "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love." Interestingly the cover didn't show Marie's picture - so many programmers at Black Radio just assumed she was black. When her second album, "Lady T," came out, much of the R&B world was shocked to see how fair-skinned she was.

"It Must Be Magic" turned out to be her last album for Motown with whom she had a nasty legal battle. Marie got out of her contract with Motown, and the case ended up with the courts passing what is now known as "The Teena Marie Law" - which states that a label cannot keep an artist under contract without putting out an album by him or her.
Subsequently Marie signed with Epic Records and released the concept album "Robbery" in 1983, which featured the singles, "Shadow Boxing" and "Casanova Brown". The latter was allegedly about her real-life romance with mentor Rick James. In 1984, Marie released her biggest-selling album, "Star Child." It yielded the top 10 hit, "Lover girl" and the top 5 R&B single, "Out On A Limb".
Marie released a rock and roll concept album in 1986 titled "Emerald City." It wasn't as successful as her predecessors. In 1987, she returned to her R&B roots and released the platinum album, "Naked to the World." That album contained her only #1 single on any Billboard chart, "Ooh La La La", which reached the top of the R&B Singles chart. In 1990 she released, "Ivory," her popularity faded in the late 80's and she was dropped from her Epic Records label. She released her next album titled "Passion Play" in 1994 on her own independent label.
After a 14-year absence from the spotlight, Marie returned to her musical career by signing with Cash Money Records. She released her comeback album, "La Dona," in 2004. It became a gold success on the basis of the Al Green-sampled "Still In Love" and a duet with Gerald Levert, "A Rose By Any Other Name". Marie was then nominated for a 2005 Grammy for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for "Still In Love".
Marie has also appeared as a judge on the hip-hop reality series "The Road to Super stardom with Missy Elliott." She also features on the soundtrack of the 1986 movie Top Gun for her song "Lead Me On."
