Artist Biography - Steve Forbert
|
Singer/songwriter Steve Forbert was born in Meridian, MS, in 1955, and he was into music right from his childhood. He mastered the art of playing the guitar at the tender age of 11, and spent his school years plying in various local bands. At the age of 21 Forbert realized his true calling, quit his job as a truck driver and moved to New York.
Before establishing a foothold in the Manhattan club circuit, Forbert played at Grand Central Station for spare change. He signed a recording deal with Nemperor, and came out with his first album 'Alive on Arrival' in 1978. The album was highly appreciated for its taut, poetic lyrics. His second effort 'Jackrabbit Slim' released in 1979 spawned the hit single 'Romeo's Tune'. After the success of the second album, Forbert came out with 'Little Stevie Orbit' in 1980 that was followed by an eponymous album in 1982. Both the albums failed to replicate the success of their predecessor and subsequently, Forbert was dropped by his label.
After being dropped by the label, Forbert concentrated on his songwriting skills and played regularly throughout the South. In 1988, he signed a recording deal with Geffen, and released the album 'Streets of This Town' which was followed by 'The American in Me'. Once again history repeated itself, both the albums failed to chart and subsequently his label dropped Forbert.
Not the one to be dithered, Forbert signed a recording deal with Warner Bros.-affiliated Giant label. He came out with two more studio albums, 1995's Mission of the Crossroad Palms and 1996's Rocking Horse Head that did quite well. 'Here's Your Pizza' followed the two albums. He then signed a recording deal with Koch Records, and came out with the albums 'Evergreen Boy' 2000 and 'Any Old Time' 2002. In 2004 he came out with yet another album 'Just Like There's Nothin' to It'. In 2007 he released the album 'On Stage at World Cafe Live'.
