It all began one day on September 23, 1995 in Springfield, Massachusetts, when a group of friends decided to take their love of hard rock groups. Eventually Aaron Lewis, Mike Mushok, Johnny April, and Jon Wysocki began penning their own lyrics and composing their own music. The result was the band Staind. A modern hard rock band needs much more than simply the will to thrive. A bit of luck helps as well. At first, it appears they would be done in by bad luck. Staind was billed to open a show for Limp Bizkit but Fred Durst was so appalled by the art work on Staind's debut album Tormented that he initially tried to have the group removed from the lineup that night. However, after hearing the group perform he returned to praise the band and insisted Durst and Staind stay in touch.

Durst would co-produce the group's debut major debut album, Dysfunction. Dysfunction would go double platinum. Though the album featured such singles as "Mudshovel" and "Home", it would not be the breakout album. That would be Break the Cycle. Staind had a quintuple-platinum album and its first certified single, "It's Been Awhile". Four more albums followed – 14 Shades of Grey, Chapter V, The Illusion of Progress, and Staind. The band would cultivate an audience won over by the consistent rock sound produced by the group. Lewis has received particular commendation for his vocals, as evident by his inclusion on Top Vocalists list for the hard rock genre.

Though they have not released albums quite as often as they once did, Staind remains ever popular on the road with its consistent catalog of hits. "Fade", "Price to Play", "So Far Away", "Right Here", and "Believe" will be performed live as long as Staind remains a foursome.
