Spyro Gyra is a jazz fusion band that was established in the beginning of the 1970s in Buffalo, New York, USA. The band's hit singles like ‘Shaker Song' and ‘Morning Dance' are still heard on jazz and easy listening stations, even after 30 years of its release. The band beautifully merges jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music to arrive at the sound which is loved by all. The band has got its share of criticism; it has nevertheless been praised for its live performances, which average nearly 100 per year. Except for the founding bandleader Jay Beckenstein and keyboardist Tom Schuman, the band has seen many musicians come and go.
Artist Biography - Spyro Gyra
The band was formed in Buffalo, NY, in the early '70s. Beckenstein and his old friend, keyboardist Jeremy Wall, had been heading a group which did not have stable members. Each member was involved in some different project or the other. Around 1974, a real group with permanent members began to form which had a considerable fan following. One day a club owner asked Beckenstein for the group's name, in order to advertise its upcoming show. Beckenstein out of the blue blurted out the name ‘Spirogira', which the club owner misspelled as Spyro Gyra. Hence the band Spyro Gyra was born. At that time Beckenstein, Wall, electric guitarist Chet Catallo, bassist David Wolford, drummer Eli Konikoff, and percussionist Gerardo Velez were the members of the fledgling band. Eventually, the band roped in additional keyboardist Tom Schuman to complete the line up.
The band self financed its maiden eponymous record ‘Spyro Gyra' which was released on Amherst in 1976. The album became a huge hit and the label sold the rights to the band to ‘Infinity Records', a division of MCA. In 1979 the band came out with its first major label release ‘Morning Dance'. The album became a hit after which Wall retired from live performances. The popularity of the band continued to grow during the '80s, the bands albums were always best-sellers, and its concerts often sold out. The 80s also saw a constant change in the line up of the band however, Beckenstein and Schuman remained constant. In 1990, MCA's jazz roster was taken over by GRP, so Spyro Gyra had to change labels. The band came out with its album ‘Fast Forward', towards the end of 1990 on GRP. In 1999 the band came out with the album ‘Got the Magic'. In 2001 the band signed a recording deal with Telarc-affiliated Heads Up label and issued the album ‘In Modern Times'. 2003 saw the band releasing yet another album ‘Original Cinema' which was followed by 2004's ‘Deep End'. In 2007 the band released the album ‘Good to Go-Go'.
