Kitchell was born on March 1, 1989, to a family which was deeply into art and music. Sonya's father is one of the best selling poster artists, with a love for world music and her mother is a graphic designer. Right from childhood, Sonya loved to putter on the piano that her grandfather, a classical pianist and Vietnam War correspondent, brought back from Hong Kong. Sonya gave her first public performance when she was just eight years old and from the age of 10 onwards, she started learning voice from jazz singers Sheila Jordan and Rebecca Paris. After Sonya composed her September 11 song, she got wide publicity and was asked to appear at a local club, the Iron Horse, with a group of musicians. Subsequently, the Sonya Kitchell Band was formed. At the same time, one of her songs ‘Romance' was judged as the best jazz vocal and best original song at the 2003 DownBeat Student Music Awards. She was also among the 40 composers, less than 30 years old, to be chosen for a weeklong workshop in jazz composition for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Velour noticed Sonya's exceptional talent in 2004, and took up the responsibility of managing her career. In 2005, she came out with her EP ‘Cold Day', after which she and her band shared the stage with artists such as Taj Mahal, Dar Williams and Susan Tedeschi. Her first full length album ‘Words Came Back to me', co-produced by Steve Addabbo and Jeff Krasno, was highly appreciated. The album was able to draw the attention of Starbucks Hear Music which released it as the second album on their Hear Music Debut CD series. ‘Words Came Back to Me' had a smooth blend of jazz, R&B, folk and other roots forms which added to its appeal. Kitchell has been touring quite a lot to expand her fan base and she was even the opening act for Joe Jackson's 2007 tour.
