Portsmouth FC is a renowned English Professional football club based in the south coast city of Portsmouth. The club is named as Pompey, The Blues and performs in the Premier League. The club is one of the most successful clubs in south of London. Currently managed by Harry Redknapp, the club finished at 9th position in 2006-07 season. The club was founded in 1898 and performed their first league match on 2 September 1899 and won. With winning 20 out of 28 league matches, the club passed through a successful first season. In 1901-02 season, the club won their first league match. Managed by Bob Brown in 1910-11, the club was promoted to the next season. In 1951-52, the club finished at fourth-place under the management of Bob Jackson. The team faced a lot of changes in their management and hence was relegated to second division in 1959. The 1991-92 season saw some improvement in the team's performance and was promoted to the FA Premier League. During the FA Cup in 1996-97, Portsmouth defeated FA Premier League side Leeds United and was promoted to the Premier League. With many fluctuating results, the club manages to perform consistently. In 2005-2006 season however was one of the major struggling period for the team. However they managed to face difficulties and remained as one of the toughest teams in the country. Some of the honors acquired by the club are Football League champions in 1949 and 1950,FA Cup Winners in 1939, League Division One Champions in 2003, League Division Three Champions in 1962, 1983, Southern League champions in 1902, 1920, FA Charity Shield shared in 1949.
