FC Barcelona is sport club situated in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is popularly known as Barca. Founded by Joan Gamper, this club was formed in 1899. Joan Gamper led a group of Swiss, English and Catalan footballers. Joan Gamper released an advertisement On 22 October 1899 in Los Deportes declaring his wish to form a football club. He got a favorable response to his wish and advert which resulted in a meeting at the Gimnasio Sole on November 29. This meeting was attened by Eleven players including Gualteri Wild, Lluís d'Ossó, Bartomeu Terradas, Otto Kunzle, Otto Maier, Enric Ducal, Pere Cabot, Carles Pujol, Josep Llobet, John Parsons, and William Parsons. This meeting of eleven energetic and vision bearing players gave rise to Foot-Ball Club Barcelona. Many other Spanish football clubs were also founded by British founders. The famous clubs includes Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. Because they were founded by English founders so they initially adopted English-style names.
For FC Barcelona, Gamper chose the colours, blaugrana / azulgrana, after his former team FC Basel. FC Basel is situated in Basel for which he played earlier. However, Other swiss teams for which Gamper played are supposed to be the inspiration. Initially the club used the same coat of arms as the city of Barcelona, but the club organized a competition to design their own in 1910. It was won by an anonymous entrant who produced the present model. Very soon, FC Barcelona appeared as one of the leading clubs in Spain. Getting this much fame and name, they participated in the first Campionat de Catalunya and the first Copa del Rey After wining the Copa Macaya in 1901, they won their first troffey. FC Barcelona is known to become a Catalan/regional institution. So after this the motto is El Barça és més que un club which means Barça is more than a club. Many other outstanding and efficient amateur teams that compete at futsal, rugby union, women's basketball, women's football and wheelchair basketball. These amateur teams include FCB Rugby, UB-Barça and FC Barcelona-Institut Guttman. Other playing amateur teams represent the club at ice hockey, athletics, baseball, cycling, field hockey, figure skating, and volleyball. The major trophies won by the team include UEFA Champions League, Supercopa de España, Copa Catalunya, Spanish Champions etc.. Currently, Mark Lodiong is the president of FC Barcilona.
Though Barca denied to allow any sponsorship logos on their shirts but team have won TV3 logo of Televisió de Catalunya on the left arm since 2005. In addition to this, the club announced a five year agreement with UNICEF on 14 July 2006, which includes having the UNICEF logo on their shirts. The agreement will see Barcelona donating US$1.9 million per year to UNICEF. At Champions League game held on on Tuesday 12th September 2006 against debutants Levski Sofia, the team has worn the t-shirts with the new look.
