Background - Wigan Athletic
In 1953-54 season, The club played an FA Cup match. That was the biggest match between non-league teams. Wigan was founder member of Northern Premier League, in 1968. They participated in the Football League in 1978 and ended up as runners-up. Their first season in League football saw them finishing at sixth position. Their first major achievement was silverware, Freight Rover Trophy, as a League club in 1985. The team was transferred to Division Two in 1993. Under the management of John Deehan, the club won Division Three title in 1997. With ever changing management, the team could not perform their best. In 2001, Paul Jewell was hired as the manager who propelled the team to win Division Two championship in 2002-03. The team finished in the seventh position in Division One campaign of 2003-04. The following season, Wigan earned promotion to the Premiership by displaying tremendous performance in the Coca-Cola Championship. Wigan's first season in the top-flight was won by defeating Chelsea. The team was the fourth English Football Team to be promoted to the top division for the first time in last 20 years in 2005-06 season.
