 The club qualified from fourth division to the First Division by the start of the 198283 season. In 1980s ended up in the top tier season as runners-up. After that the club participated in the UEFA cup and appeared in the FA Cup final in 1984. Watford won the FA Youth Cup in the 1988-89 season and despite their fluctuating performance, they managed to keep up with their performance. Club achieved the Division Two championship in 1997-98 and was promoted for 1998-99 season. With achieving success over Bolton, the club was promoted for the Premiership in 1998-99 season. Graham Taylor retired at the end of the 2000-01 season after his comeback. Their premiership season started off with great success by winning over Liverpool, but was disappointed by being defeated later. With several high-profile signings, the club witnessed a little improvement in their performance but was disappointed by finishing at the 14th position in the division. Lewington was hired as the manager of the team in 2002-03 season. The beginning of the season was very well but finished in mid-table. Qualifying for the FA Cup semi-final the club lost in the Premiership Southampton. The team continued with good performance in 2004-05 season and qualified for semi-final of the League Cup. The club displayed their amazing skills in early 2006 and finished at second-placed that season. Watford have recorded only five wins in the Premiership and qualified for semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Some notable players of the club are Marlon King, Ashley Young, Heišar Helguson, Tommy Smith, Paul Robinson, Alec Chamberlain, and many more. Watford defeated Hull on 24th October 2006 with a score of 2-1, defeated Middlesbrough on 4th November 2006 with a score of 2-0, defeated Stockport on 6th January 2007 with a score of 4-1, defeated Blackburn on 23rd January with a score of 2-1, defeated West Ham on 27th January 2007 with a score of 1-0, defeated West Ham on 10th February 2007 with a score of 1-0, defeated Ipswich on 17th February 2007 with a score of 1-0, defeated Plymouth on 111th march 2007 with a score of 1-0, defeated Portsmouth on 9th April 2007 with a score of 4-2, defeated Reading on 5th may 2007 with a score of 2-1.
