The reemergence of the sport came after all the outdoor leagues had disappeared in the 1985. The sport received a huge boost in popularity in 1994, when the United States hosted the World Cup. The U.S. Men's Soccer team came back from the disappointing play of 1998 and made it to the quarterfinals in the 2002 edition of the World Cup. The team continued to try to establish itself after ward, reaching the top of the rankings in its qualifying group. The 2006 U.S. Men's National Soccer team proved unable to carry that success into the World Cup held in Germany and finished with a 0-2-1 record in Group E, failing to make the tournament round.
