Background - Uefa Cup
The journey of the UEFA began in 1971 when this competition replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was abolished in 1999 and it got merged with the UEFA Cup. However, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is usually considered as a pre-cursor to qualify for the UEFA Cup for records purposes. But this process is not used for the Cup Winners' Cup. The first UEFA Cup winner was the English team Tottenham Hotspur F.C. The club followed the rule of 'one club per city' to judge the qualifying team. The rule was inherited from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but later due to some problems it was dropped in 1975. Most of the teams found this rule very unfair. The runners-up team in the domestic leagues was earlier allowed to play for the UEFA Cup. But when the competition saw a merge with UEFA's third European competition, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, the winners of domestic cup competitions were also allowed to play for the UEFA Cup. Along with these teams, the eliminated soccer clubs in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and the teams in the third place at the end of the group phase can compete in the UEFA Cup. The three Fair Play representatives along with eleven UEFA Intertoto Cup winners, and winners of some of the selective domestic league cup competitions can play for the UEFA Cup.

2007 Season Preview
|
 The trophy remains with the winning team for one full year and they have to return it back after that period of time. But, after handing it back, the team can keep a replica of the trophy that is four-fifth the size of the original one. There is a rule that the original trophy will be handed to any club that wins the UEFA Cup for three times in a row or five times overall. But this has not yet happened.
So far, only three teams have achieved the great privilege of winning their domestic league along with the domestic cup and the UEFA Cup in the same season. The teams are Galatasaray in 2000, F.C. Porto in 2003 and PFC CSKA Moscow in 2005. The current champion of the UEFA Cup is Sevilla FC. The team won the competition for the second consecutive year. The team registered their latest triumph on 16th May 2007 at Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland where the team defeated fellow Spaniards RCD Espanyol on penalties. The 2007-08 UEFA Cup Final is scheduled to take place at the venue of Manchester Stadium, Manchester, while the 2008-09 UEFA Cup Final will be played at the ªukru Saracoglu Stadium, Istanbul.
