Switzerland is made up of a healthy mix of youth and experience, combining talented younger players such as striker Eren Derdiyok, mid-fielder Tranquillo Barnetta, and goalkeeper Diego Benaglio, with seasoned veterans such as forwards Alexander Frei and Blaise N'Kufo. The current squad hopes to at least to repeat the achievements of their predecessors who made their way into the top eight in 1934 (finished 7th), 1938 (finished 7th), and 1954 (finished 8th). Hitzfeld's Schweizer Nati team had a distinctly disappointing start on their road to the 2010 finals; after conceding to a scoreless draw on the road to Israel in the final minute, a disastrous 2-1 defeat in Zurich at the hands of Luxembourg, the little fish in the Swiss' pond, brought much shame and embarrassment upon the squad. However, the surprising defeat seemed to ultimately wake-up the Swiss, with the club reeling off five victories – against Latvia (2-1), Greece (2-1 and 2-0) and Moldova (2-0 and 2-0). Switzerland only gave up points again in a 2-2 draw to the Latvians on the road, but a comfortable 3-0 revenge win in Luxembourg and a scoreless draw with Israel in front of a delirious Basel crowd clinched the top spot in European Group 2 and a guaranteed the Schweizer Nati a spot in South Africa.

 Alexander Frei is the undisputed Swiss leader, both on and off the field, and the Basel striker, who finished the qualifiers with five goals and is also Switzerland's all-time record goal-scorer, was coach Hitzfeld's natural choice to become named the national team captain. Frei's goal total was matched by that of Blaise N'Kufo, who was born in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, first called up by the Swiss in 2000, and who has combined with Frei to provide quite the productive attack duo. At the top, Ottmar Hitzfeld is one of Europe's most highly regarded and most successful senior coaches, and is one of only two coaches to have led two different clubs to UEFA Champions League glory while with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. He became Switzerland head coach in July of 2008 and, after a shaky break-in in period, led his team to a direct qualifying berth for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The former German-amateur international, who played in the 1972 Olympic Games, is no stranger to Switzerland after stints with Basel (1971-75), Lugano (1978-80), and Lucerne (1980-83) during his playing days.
