 The club was formed on March 22, 1889 and has since then impressed their fans with outstanding soccer action. The club's stadium, Bramall Lane was the foremost stadium to have Floodlights installed in their stadium. Sheffield was the first ever club in the country to be named United. Sheffield performed their first match against Notts Rangers of the Midland Counties League in 1889 but was disappointed. The first ever game at their home stadium took place on September 28 1889 that was against Birmingham St George. With impressive local games and friendly matches the club qualified for the second round of the FA Cup. The club participated in the Midland Counties League and finished in the fifth position for the 1890-91 season and participated in the Northern League and finished at the third position. Sheffield got their first promotion to First Division in 1892-93 and won the League Championship in 1897-98. Their very first FA Cup was achieved on April 15, 1899. The club won their first Wembley Cup Final on April 25, 1925 by defeating Cardiff City. In 1971, Sheffield witnessed six victories and five draws to win promotion from Division Two. This was one of the glorious years for the team. However were disappointed in Division One being defeated by Manchester United. In 1978-79 season, the team was transferred to the Third Division.
With the appointment of Dave Bassett, the team was promoted from third division to First Division for the 1990-91 season. The team was top division of English football for a glorious four seasons and that included first two Premier League games. With many unsuccessful managers, the team faced a lot of instability in their performance. The team qualified for the FA Cup semi final in 1998. The team continued with their good performance and again qualified for the semi-finals of the FA Cup and League cup. Top scorers for the 2006-07 season were Neil Shipperley with 11 goals, Danny Webber with 10 goals, Paul Ifill with 9 goals and Steven Kabba with 9 goals. Sheffield defeated Fulham on 30th January 2007 with a score of 2-0, defeated Tottenham on 10th February 2007 with a score of 2-1, defeated West Ham on 14th April 2007 with a score of 3-0, defeated Watford on 28th April 2007 with a score of 1-0.
