Background - San Jose Earthquakes
The original MLS team left under the ownership of Anschutz Entertainment Group, but it was Lewis Wolff and John Fisher, the principal owners of the Oakland Athletics decided to build a soccer specific stadium and find an expansion team to sell soccer tickets once again. That team started once the new owners started operating the Earthquakes web site that had stood inactive since the end of 2005. With that the exciting return of San Jose professional soccer began.
San Jose not only invoked a familiar team name, but brought back a familiar coach, Frank Yallop, the old coach of the original MLS Earthquake. The return of the Earthquakes during the 2008 season brought fervor throughout the soccer fields of Southern California and the team finished with a 8-13-9 record in the expansion team's inaugural season.

2009 Season Preview
|
 Though the team had the worst record in the MLS and a last place finish in the weak Western Conference, hopes are high for 2009. The team suffered from an anemic offense that averaged only 1.07 goals a game. This number fell far below the rest of the league. The bright spot came on the other side of the field. The Earthquakes sold soccer tickets to hard fought matches that found opponents struggling to score.
The opposition only managed to score 1.27 goals a game, good for the fourth stingiest group in the league. The bright offensive spots for 2009 include Darren Huckerby. Huckerby managed to score six goals in only 14 games. With a full season he could set the net on fire. He will need players like Ryan Johnson, Ronnie O'Brien, and Arturo Alvarez to join the party and put the other team on their heels.
