Real Salt Lake Tickets As reigning MLS Cup Champions, Real Salt Lake is a Major League Soccer club which joined the league as an expansion franchise in 2005 and plays its home games at the soccer-specific Rio Tinto Stadium (capacity 20,008) in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah. The title "Real" – pronounced [re'al] in Spanish – is traditionally used by certain Spanish football clubs such as Real Madrid of La Liga. Translated into English as "royal", it is taken by teams that make the King of Spain an honorary member of the club. Dave Checketts and SCP Worldwide partners Dean Howes, Kenneth Munoz, Michael McCarthy, and Chris Bevilacqua, chose Real Salt Lake for the team's name with the intent of associating the team with the successful soccer club Real Madrid, as well as to develop a brand that was clearly associated with association football. If ever there was a Cinderella story, Real Salt Lake was the true definition of one in 2009, especially given that it is not very often that the team who wins the championship was one which had a losing record during the regular season. Late in the year, Real Salt Lake looked to be a real long shot to even make the playoffs at all, but the club seemed to hit their stride at the perfect time, which, along with the implosion of Colorado, set this Cinderella team on their way. Real Salt Lake was the final team to qualify for the MLS playoffs in 2009. Technically the eighth overall seed, the team was the fifth place team in the Western Conference and was moved to the Eastern Conference playoff bracket. It was here where they first defeated the defending champs, the Columbus Crew, before winning the Eastern Conference championship by beating the Chicago Fire on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 draw in regulation. Real Salt Lake then defeated the L.A. Galaxy for the MLS Cup, first playing to a 1-1 tie through overtime before winning the championship 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout to complete the upset – also qualifying Real Salt Lake for the group stage of the 2010 CONCACAF Champions League.

 Coach Jason Kreis returns nearly his entire MLS Cup-winning squad, which translates to his also having plenty of scoring at his disposal. The addition of Costa Rican International forward Alvaro Saborio (21 games and 2 goals in 2009 while on-loan to England's Bristol City F.C.) should take pressure off Real's very talented forward Robbie Finley (22 games, 15 goals, 2 assists), while both players will likely find the back of the net frequently. The mid-field should be very reliable with captain Kyle Beckerman (29 games, 3 goals, 1 assist) and Javier Morales (28 games, 2 goals, 5 assists) controlling the pace. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando (15-10-6 record, 93 saves) was amazing during last season's playoffs and may very well be the best keeper in the world when it comes to penalty shootouts. If Salt Lake can improve upon their dismal 2-11-2 road record from last year, they will truly have a chance to repeat as MLS champs. In summary, the defending champions will look to ride their energetic mid-field and world-caliber keeper to another deep postseason run. Rimando stopped everything during RSL's playoff run last year, and there's no reason to believe that he continue doing the same in 2010. The dependable Beckerman will undoubtedly continue to hold down the mid-field for this solid, even if unspectacular, Real Salt Lake squad. There is only one real way to be a part of the enthusiasm catapulting this team into the new season in defense of their championship crown.
