Background - New England Revolution
The New England Revolution play all their home matches at Gillette Stadium that is located in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The seating capacity of this stadium is 68,756, including 6,000 club seats and 87 luxury suites. The stadium is owned and operated by American businessman Robert Kraft, who also owns the Patriots and Revolution. Earlier, the club used to play their home games at the adjacent Foxboro Stadium that is and has now been demolished during the 1996 through 2001 seasons. The New England revolution is the only MLS team who holds the distinction of having every game they have played televised. The name 'Midnight Riders' is given in honor of the famous rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes, who announced the departure of British troops from Boston to Concord at the beginning of the American Revolution. The north stand of the stadium that the New England Revolution supporters stand is known as 'The Fort'. Notable soccer players who have been associated with the New England Revolution are Leonel Alvarez, Mike Burns, Clint Dempsey, Raul Diaz Arce, Wolde Harris, John Harkes, Alexi Lalas, Joe-Max Moore, Eric Wynalda and Walter Zenga. The Head Coaches for the New England Revolution team were Frank Stapleton in 1996, Thomas Rongen from 1996 to 1998, Walter Zenga from 1998 to 1999, Steve Nicol in 1999, Fernando Clavijo from 2000 to 2002.
In 2008, the New England Revolution excited fans with a competitive team that finished third during the regular season, went to the quarterfinals in the MLS Cup Playoffs, made it all the way to the semifinals in the Open Cup, and won the SuperLiga. The win in the SuperLiga was the second championship for the team in two seasons (in 2007 they won the Open Cup). Previously the team had come close, but remained trophy-less in a number of the cups and international competitions.
