Background - Los Angeles Galaxy
The initial 'Galaxy' is used in the name to identify Los Angeles as the base of many Hollywood 'stars.' from 1996 till 2002, this soccer club played all their home games at the Rose Bowl. After that they started playing at their own soccer-specific stadium, The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The Home Depot Center is also shared with Chivas USA. The original colors of the team were teal and gold, but now the teal color has been changed to green. In July 2007, with the arrival of football star David Beckham, the team has undergone a makeover with a new color scheme of blue, gold, and white. The two main supporter clubs for the team are The Galaxians, and the Los Angeles Riot Squad. Their popular mascot is known as "Cozmo," a frog-like extraterrestrial.
Some of the prominent former football players who have left a mark for the team include Chris Armas, Paul Caligiuri, Jorge Campos, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Robin Fraser, Adam Frye, Kevin Hartman, Carlos Hermosillo, Luis Hernández, Andreas Herzog, Eduardo Hurtado, Alexi Lalas, Martín Machon, Curt Onalfo, Clint Mathis, Hong Myung-Bo, Carlos Ruiz and Welton. The team's winning records are very remarkable, with many champions trophy to their credit. They have won the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2000 and remained Runner-up for 1997, winner of the MLS Cup in 2002 and 2005, while Runner-up in 1996, 1999 and 2001, winner of the MLS Supporters' Shield in 1998 and 2002 and Runner-up in 1996 and 1999.

2009 Season Preview
|
 Despite the star power at the Home Depot Center, the Galaxy limped through the 2008 on route to an 8-13-9 record. The team did not have a problem with a lack of scoring. Los Angeles had the most goals in the MLS. Landon Donovan led the league in scoring with 20 goals and Eddie Buddle came in third with 15. David Beckham managed to tally 10 assists over the course of the year.
The problem was with the defense. Goal keepers Steve Cronin, Josh Wicks, and Josh Saunders each allowed over two goals a game. This is a sport where most teams only average between one and two goals a game, so the dreadful goal play sunk an otherwise explosive team.
This season those defensive lapses must be addressed. The team simply has too much top end talent to not make the playoffs. No changes have been made so far, so the goalies need to get in gear and the defenders need to take away passing lanes and create impossible angles for shots.
