The team has been one of the highest ranking national teams in Europe. The team is nicknamed as 'The Three Lions'. England are the most successful of the four Home Nations and have won the British Home Championship 34 times and the FIFA World Cup once. They are currently ranked 5th in the world as on September 2006.

Captained by Cuthbert Ottaway, England played against Scotland at Hamilton Crescent in Patrick, Scotland in 1872, in the first international football match. However, it was only in the following year that they recorded their first win, 4-2 over Scotland at the Kennigton Oval. In 1929, England saw their first defeat outside the British Isles, losing 4-3 to Spain in Madrid.
Even after joining FIFA in 1906, England could not enter the first three World Cups because of troubled relationship between FIFA and the British associations. They managed to defeat 1934 World Cup winners Italy in the 'Battle of Highbury'. England started improving on their training and tactics by 1960 and gave a commendable performance in 1962 World Cup. More and more young players were making their mark, including Bobby Moore. After the retirement of Winterbottom former captain Alf Ramsey was appointed and also crucially won the right to choose the squad and team himself, taking that role away from the selection committee. Ramsey had predicted that England would win the next tournament which England were hosting. Ramsey's prediction for 1966 World Cup came true. An unremarkable group phase saw England win two and draw one of their games, with a 30 yard strike by Bobby Charlton at Wembley against Mexico proving a highlight. Charlton then hit both goals in a 2-1 semi-final win over Portugal and England had reached the final. They competed against West Germany in the finals. England's 'Wingless Wonders', a phrase coined by the press after Ramsey devised a new 4-3-3 system which relied on stamina-based midfield players rather than natural wingers won the final 4-2 after extra time, with three goals from Hurst and one from Martin Peters.
