Background - Energie Cottbus
The club re-emerged in 1949, after the Nazis banned it in 1933. Initially the club was given many names like Franz Mehring Marga and BSG Aktivist Brieske-Ost in 1950, again it was renamed as SC Aktivist Brieske-Senftenberg in 1954. Mid 60s bought a little stability to the club and was named as BSG Energie in early 1966. Frequent changes in the teams led to instability and hence the team performance was not up-to mark during their early years. The team has enjoyed relative prosperity as one of the best teams of the country. The club served as an II division or lower-table I division teams in East Germany and now enjoys a higher level while playing in Bundesliga. The team was promoted to the 2. Bundesliga in the year 1997 and followed their way to Bundesliga in the year 2000. The team displayed their talents and maintained their position for three years. With contribution from their most acclaimed player Vasile Miriuta, the team enjoyed their great promotion. Since their promotion, the club has been a constant attraction in the Bundesliga. The club is the only team to participate at the top division.
