Background - Dc United
The D.C. United club is the most successful team of the founding ten members of MLS in 1996. The team embarked their name in history by winning the first "double" in modern U.S. soccer history in 1996 where they beat the Los Angeles Galaxy to take home the MLS Cup and they are also the first team to win the U.S. Open Cup. Their success story does not end here, they have got a good success rate in CONCACAF competitions, where they have won the Champions' Cup and the InterAmerican Cup in 1998. The home ground of the D.C. United club is the famous Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. With the impressive capacity of 56,692 seats, the stadium is situated on East Capitol Street. The District of Columbia is the owner of this stadium and the D.C. United shares it with another team, the Washington Nationals of major League Baseball. However, there are some plans to build a soccer-specific stadium with the capacity of 27,000 seats just near the Popular Point on the east side of the Anacostia River.

 Recently, the D.C. United has signed an initial one-year strategic partnership with Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro. The goal of this agreement is to heighten the sporting and commercial success of both the clubs by sharing their respective expertise and experience as well as working together for new opportunities for them. Some of the notable players of all time who were associated with D.C. United include Freddy Adu, Jeff Agoos, Bobby Convey, Raul Diaz Arce, Luciano Emilio, Alecko Eskandarian, Marco Etcheverry, Christian Gomez, John Harkes, Dema Kovalenko, Roy Lassiter, Carlos Llamosa, Jaime Moreno, Ryan Nelsen, Ben Olsen, Eddie Pope, Tony Sanneh, Earnie Stewart, Hristo Stoichkov and Richie Williams. The soccer team has grown under the guidance of head coaches like Bruce Arena from 1996 to 1998, Thomas Rongen from 1999 to 2001, Ray Hudson from 2002 to 2003, Peter Nowak from 2004 to 2006 and Tom Soehn who was appointed as the head coach in 2006.
The D.C. United had a down season last year, finishing 11-15-4 and out of the playoffs. This was a major disappointment finishing 2006 and 2007 with the best record in not just the Eastern Conference, but with the best record in the league. Instead, the team finished in the middle of the pack in scoring and second to last i goals allowed. This doomed the team the entire season. The United came back though, and won the U.S. Open Cup
In 2009, the United have begun the process of rebuilding. One veteran not leaving the team will be Bryan Namoff, a staple of the D.C. team since 2001. Namoff may not be a goal machine, but he is a solid defender that should help Luciano Emilio and Jamie Moreno lead the charge into a successful regular season. Either Zach Wells, Louis Crayton, or James Thorpe will have to emerge as not only a decent goal keeper, but they will have to excel to bring the United back to their former glory.
