Background - Charlton Athletic Fc
Charlton are based in London. It began as a boys club at Charlton, London in 1905. Their formative years were never impeded by the lack of facilities. They used the local fishmonger and chip shop as their dressing room. They break to fame came in 1921.That year, they were selected to the Football League in 1921.It was attributed to their string of accomplishments as a boys, amateur and semi-professional side. They were promoted to the First Division in 1936.
In 1937 Charlton completed runners up in the First Division. They became fourth in 1938 and third in 1939.Before the World War II it was the most unswerving squad at the apex flight of English football. Even during the war years they held their glory and won the 'war' cup. They reached the finals of 1946 FA Cup and became the victors of the FA Cup in 1947. After the renewed football attendances in the post-war years, Charlton became the only English football side to have a regular over 40,000 crowd during a full season. Their ground was the largest football earth in the League, drawing mobs exceeding of 70,000.

2006 Season Preview

 In 1957, the team was relegated to the Second Division. In 1972, it was further dropped to the third division. In 1975 it was back to the second division. Their odysseys between divisions continue till the early 1980s. This effected a change in management.In 1984 financial matters forced it to go into administration. it was reformed as Charlton Athletic (1984) Ltd. They had to vacate the ground valley in 1984 due to safety reasons and shared Selhurst Park with Crystal Palace F.C.
Charlton returned to the First Division in 1986 as Second Division runners-up. But were removed again in 1990. Alan Curbishley became the manager in 1991. In December 1992, they had homecoming to a new and improved Valley. The 1992-93 seasons began promisingly. The side appeared good bets for promotion, but they lost in the play offs. In 1994 they made to the quarterfinals of the F.A Cup. The 1997-98 was Charlton's best spell till that period. In the Division One finals, they fought Sunderland in a thrilling game and won on penalties. Soon they were promoted to the Premiership. Charlton won Division One title in 2000 and returned to the Premiership. Its return saw a marvelous ninth place finish. The 2003-04 was the best league season for the club in last 50 years. They finished seventh in the final table. In 2004-05, Charlton ended 11th. They were slumped to 13th in Premiership challenge. Curbishley announced his resignation. But, his performance linked him to be the successor of Sven Goran Eriksson.
Charlton is the first Premiership club to start a youth academy in Tucson, Arizona the United States. It has its youth academies already in London, Spain and South Africa.It is the only club to have a City Learning Centre (opened in October 2005). Through CLC successful study support is being provided to local youngsters from 2001.The club is singular among football clubs of Europe. A seat is reserved on the director's board for supporters. All season ticket holders above the age of 18 are eligible to vote.
