Background - Bayer Leverkusen
The football club was separated from other activities held within the club that led to a separate football department. The department was formed on June 8, 1928 and the separate association, Sportvereinigung Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The department was also handled the handball and fist-ball players, athletics, and boxing department under them. Their traditional red and black uniform distinguishes them from far away. Throughout their separation period and into the 1930s, the club played in third and fourth division football league. Soon they were promoted to the second highest level. The same year the club wore their "Bayer" cross for the very first time. SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen made their very first upper league appearance in 1951, in Oberliga West. The players displayed their talents at Oberliga West till 1956 and were removed after that. They reappeared in the upper leagues in 1962. The team with many ups and downs remained as one of the most popular teams among their fans. Some of the great Honors presented to the teams were German Cup, in 1993, UEFA Cup, in 1988, Bundesliga runners-up in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002, German Cup finalist of 2002 and UEFA Champions League finalist, in 2002.
