Australia first finished atop the previous qualifying stage ahead of Qatar, China, and Asian champion Iraq, despite losing matches to the last two, while the final stage proved victorious for Verbeek's tactical wit as the Aussies remained undefeated through eight matches – five points ahead of Japan, and with Bahrain, Qatar, and Uzbekistan trailing far behind. Undoubtedly Tim Cahill has become a good luck charm for the national team, with the attacking mid-fielder recording a remarkable goal for the Socceroos thanks to his uncanny body awareness and athletic ability. Striker Harry Kewell provides a source of inspiration on the left, with Brett Emerton playing an equally important role at the opposite forward, while in the center of it all, the under-rated duo of Vince Grella and Jason Culina are the driving force of this well-oiled machine. The current Australian squad is also known for their defense, with defender Lucas Neill and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer both playing significant roles as the Aussies surrendered just four goals – including a record stretch of seven matches without giving one up at all – while making their way to South Africa 2010.

 After his long apprenticeship under Guus Hiddink, Pim Verbeek stepped from behind the curtain to take Korea Republic to the 2007 AFC Asian Cup before taking over the show for Australia in December 2007, just prior to the beginning of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Verbeek has brought a down-to-earth approach to the team – built not only on the stingy rock-solid defense, but also with great attacking ability up front as well. Highly respected by his players, the current Aussie coach has instilled a great sense of team in what is an extremely motivated and focused squad. Australia has previously appeared on the world stage only twice, but now seems to be making up for lost time by qualifying for the World Cup for their second time in a row. Following their breakthrough performance in 1974, where a roster of amateurs were far from embarrassed despite their first-round elimination, the sports-crazy Australians had to wait another 32 years before their nation's team would return to the FIFA World Cup. Returning to Germany, the same site as their only previous appearance, proved quite a success, as the Socceroos finished second in their group, behind only Brazil and ahead of Croatia and Japan. It then took a penalty kick, deep into injury-time, for the Italians to overcome the Aussies in the Round of 16 before the Azzurri continued on to win the championship. Australia is going to South Africa with the intent of doing better than last time, and doing everything possible to achieve that goal.
