Snow Patrol
Background- Snow Patrol became one the first U.K. rock act ever who broke the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in the last 13 years.
Gary Lightbody and Mark McClelland were pursuing an education in Dundee, Scotland. They struck up friendship and found out that they shared same passion- for music. Gary Lightbody was a songwriter-singer and could play guitar well and Mark McClelland was expert in keyboard. They decided to form a band and named it as 'Shrug', in late 1994. Both of them are the natives of Northern Ireland. They started performing gigs within their University campus. Fter some time they also started performing at the pubs. Later, Jonny Quinn, joined with the band as the drummer. After one year, they changed their name to 'Polar Bear' or 'Polarbear'.
In 1997, they sigend up with Electric Honey label and released 'Starfighter Pilot', a three-track EP. They had some other band members who collaborated in this record. Richard Colburn, from the band Belle & Sebastian, played drums on this record, and Stuart Murdoch, from the same band, sang on one of the b-sides. Later, they had to changed their band name to 'Snow Patrol' when they came to know that anotherband from America, existed with the same name. Eventually, another drummer joined 'Snow Patrol' as permanent drummer, Jonny Quinn who hailed from Northern Ireland. After Quinn joined in, the band released their next EP 'Little Hide' on Jeepster Records. This was followed by the single 'One Hundred Things You Should Have Done in Bed'. It was a minor hit. After the singles received favorable response, Jeepster came out with their videos and started promoting them heavily and after some time, 'Snow Patrol' started appearing on television. In the year 1998, they appeared for the first time for the interview in MTV. In the same year, they also appeared on Channel Four, when a documentary was being made on Jeepster Records.

The band released two more albums on Jeepster records, 'Songs For Polarbears' in the year 1998, which had a slight remix version of their debut single Singfighter Pilot and 'When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up' in the year 2001. After that guitarist Nathan Connolly joined the band. In the same year, Gary brought in some independent Scottish musicians from such acts as Mogwai, to play in the band in their CD albums, 'supergroup' and 'The Reindeer Section'. Gary was also the vocalist for the single 'Cut La Roc'.
When, the band released their first album, on August in the year 1998, 'Songs for Polar Bears, the album became a huge hit throughout the U.K. After the success of the album, they performed in a show, where they gathered huge fan base. When Gary Lightbody, Jonny Quinn and Mark McClelland finished their graduation they moved from Dundee to Glasgow in late 2000. They signed up a contract with Polydor and Chris Lord-Alge was signed in as their producer and came out with the album 'Final Straw' in the year 2004. The singles such as 'Chocolate,' 'Run,' and 'Spitting Games,' of the album was a hit and sold for two million copies in their native U.K. 'Final Straw' became the 26th most popular British album. In the year 2005, Mark McClelland, founding member left the band. After some time, Paul Wilson as the bass player and Tom Simpson as the keyboardist joined the band. In 2005, the opened a slot on U2's Vertigo Tour of Europe. In 2006, Snow Patrol released their fourth album, the epic 'Eyes Open'. The single 'Chasing Cars', from the album was certified gold. Snow Patrol also became the first U.K. rock act in 13 years to break the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.
