Sly Stone nearly perfected the funk, which was invented by great James Brown. His music really rejected prevalent stylistic boundaries and his backup band Family Stone daringly ignored gender and racial restrictions by creating a thorough series of euphoric yet very well politically charged records. These tremendous records proved as a massive influence on various artists of all cultural and musical backgrounds. Sly Stone was born on March 15, 1944, in the suburbs of Dallas, TX. His childhood proved as very conducive one to develop his musical skills. At the age of 16, Sly recorded the popular local hit "Long Time Gone." These gigs were good enough to give him the right boost and then he started studying trumpet, theory and composition. In 1966, he formed his band "Sly the Stoners," at the same time his younger brother was leading "Freddie the Stone Souls," his own band. After some time the siblings merged the two band and then recruited trumpeter Cynthia Robinson, bassist Larry Graham, drummer Greg Errico, and saxophonist Jerry Martini, and then born the "Sly the Family Stone." In 1968, the band issued their debut single, ""I Ain't Got Nobody," the album received a reasonable success and then the group received an offer from Epic records, which they accepted heartily.
Artist Biography - Sly Stone
Under the Epic records, the band released their next LP "A Whole New Thing," in 1967, followed by "Dance to the Music" in 1968. Though Sly was associated with his back up band but he continued gaining the reviews for his electrifying live performances and also continued making the people run for tickets to watch him performing live. The band topped both the RB and Pop charts with the smash hits "Everyday People," and "Sing a Simple Song." In 1970, the band released chart buster, "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin" propelled by percussive groove.
After this the group went through a dark period of slump. Their defiant singles "There's a Riot Goin' On," "Family Affair," and "Running Away" earned them the lost fame and pubic attention. In 1973, Sly issued his last truly great album "Fresh." After releasing "Small Talk" the band unraveled. In 1975, the band released "High on you," though the album credited to Stone alone and also earned him the critical appraisal. In the early 80s' Stone was struggling with his drug problems and legal battles. In 1979, he released "Back on the Right Track," which received the reasonable success. After the release of "Eek-a-Bo-Static," in 1987, the Stone couldn't release any other album because of his personal problems. In 1993, Sly the Family Stone was inducted into Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame but Stone couldn't make a substantial comeback.
