"Sly & the Family Stone" cultivated all of the distinct musical and social trends prevalent in the late '60s. It's all done by creating a brilliant and wild fusion of rock, soul, R&B, psychedelic, and popular funk that astonishingly broke boundaries down without a mere second thought. The band is led by Sly Stone. Actually the band was comprised of talented men and women. The band comprised black and white members and that is truly making the band the first unique fully integrated group in the history of rock. There has been seen a tremendous demand for "Sly and Family Stone" concert tickets, whenever they perform live. No body before this band really delved into social and political commentary; followed fervently by its start and then became a tradition in funk, soul and hip-hop. Along with well known James Brown, the band brought the not so popular hard funk into the mainstream. The arrangements of the band were ingenious very well filled with group vocals, punchy horns, syncopated rhythms and pop melodies. The band was quite popular in the 60s but after climbing the new heights of fame band suddenly disillusioned. Actually stone became addict to a variety of harmful drugs and in this unfortunate process, his music gradually lost its shine and glory and by the time it grew darker and slower. He bounced back with "There's a Riot Going On," in 1971 and this really set the pace for next decade with its slurred vocals, elastic bass, and militant Black Power stance. In 1973, he came again with "Fresh," a modern funk classic. His addictions didn't spare him and slowly he succumbed to it. Nevertheless his popular music continued to provide the so called basic template for funk, urban soul and hip-hop. Sly was born as Sylvester Stewart on March 15, 1944. He had a keen interest in music and by the age of 16, he had a superb regional hit with "Long Time Away."
Artist Biography - Sly And The Family Stone
During his early years, he studied music, theory and composition. He also worked with some famous bands including the Great Society, Beau Brummels, Bobby Freeman and the popular Mojo Men. Stone formed the Stoners in 1966, which featured talented trumpeter Cynthia Robinson. Though the band didn't last long, he recruited Robinson as one of the main members of his next band, "Sly & the Family Stone."
It was formed in early 1967. The group also featured Larry Graham Jr. (bass, vocals), Fred Stewart (guitar, vocals), Greg Errico (drums), Rosie Stone (piano) and Jerry Martini (saxophone), all the band members were of different racial backgrounds. Their eclectic music and multiracial composition dramatically made them truly distinctive from the various flower-power bands in San Francisco. The group scored its first regional hit with the single, "I Ain't Got Nobody." With this success the band signed with the Epic Records and released their first album, "A Whole New Thing; followed by "Life" in 1968 and "Everyday People" in the same year. Their next album climbed to number 13 and spent over 100 weeks on the popular music charts, the album featured "Sing a Simple Song," "Everyday People," "I Want to Take You Higher," and "Stand." Consequently, the band became one of the best live bands of the '60s. Though the band was scaling the new heights of fame, Stone was suffering from his personal problems. Their next album "There's a Riot Goin' On" hit the number one slot. In 1972, Graham and Errico, left the band and soon replaced by Andy Newark and Rusty Allen. During the early 80s' Disco was growing in the popularity and for the time being it had overtaken the funk. Though Sly wanted to compete with prevalent disco, but he was suffering from his personal problems. In 1979, Stone signed with Warner Brothers and issued "Back on the Right Track," but the album didn't do well also received some critical thrashing. In 1983, Stone entered rehab, to counter his personal problems. In 1986, he appeared on Jesse Johnson's R&B hit "Crazay." Next year, he sang with well known Martha Davis on "Love & Affection" for the Soul man soundtrack. Though, he was trying to get back to his musical rhythm internally he was battling with his addiction.
