Siouxsie Sioux
Siouxsie was a member of the Bromley Contingent and an early Pistols fan. Dubbed the Ice Queen of punk and later on the princess of goth, she was a scene stealer and original face for loads of punkettes. Siouxsie's first gig was as an unrehearsed fill-in band at the 100 Club's "Punk Rock Festival", two nights in July, 1976 organized by Malcolm McLaren. The following year The Bromley Contingent followed the Pistols to France and Siouxsie was punched by an Arab. She was wearing a topless bra, black vinyl stockings and a black armband with a swastika on it. Siouxsie accidentally earned a position in the history of pop culture by appearing on the television show that launched the Sex Pistol's carreer. Siouxsie became famous for her high leg kicking on stage as well as her nazi salutes and in her career has been decorated with such extreme images as swastikas and the Star of David. One of the leading lights of female Punk with Cleopatra looks. The Banshees were commended as a great live band with enough songs to earn them consideration, but a contract escaped them. Someone with a paint can sprayed "Sign Siouxsie Now" on several record company buildings, and thatdidn't help. Nor did Siouxsie's habit of insulting A & R men from behind her mike. They were turned down by Anchor, EMI, RCA, Chrysalis, CBS and Decca until June 1978 when Polydor, who signed The Jam, came forward. They gave them a three album deal with full creative control. Hong Kong Garden, released in August, went to number 3, and the album The Scream went to number 12.
