Shinedown formed in 2001 after Brent Smith and the label Atlantic Records decided to move forward, leaving his old band behind. Smith, the lead singer, worked on his songwriting and began to recruit musicians to play his vision. Those musicians included bassist Brad Stewart, lead guitarist Jasin Todd, and drummer Barry Kerch. The group recorded and released the album Leave a Whisper in 2003. The album received generally favorable reviews from critics and captivated its audience with singles like Fly from the Inside and 45. The group toured heavily and sold Shinedown tickets for a very busy tour schedule. This included a stint opening for Van Halen in 2004.
The album went platinum in 2005 and Shinedown re-released the album with a new single, the cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man. The second studio album, Us and Them, hit the shelves in October 2005. Singles Save Me, I Dare You, and Heroes maintained their positions at the top of the charts and made sure Shinedown would not be a one-album wonder. Shinedown began touring again, this time on the tickets as supporting act to Godsmack and Rob Zombie.

Shinedown has returned to the United States and plans to pick up touring, selling concert tickets for the promotional tour for the Sound of Madness.
The group will be without Nick Perri though. He left the group. His departure makes him the current lineup Smith as the lead singer, Zach Myers as the lead guitarist, Kerch as the drummer, and Eric Bass as the new bass guitarist.
