The city of Seattle is located in the state of Washington, United States. Seattle lies in the King County and is the county seat of the same. As per the Washington State Office of Financial Management's estimates of the year 2008. the population of the city stands at 592,800, making it the most populous city in Washington.

Seattle is a part of the 'Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Statistical Area' and is merely 96 miles away from the U.S- Canada border. The city is considered a major economic, cultural and educational center in the region and is know by its popular nickname 'Emerald City'. As per the the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 142.5 sq miles, of which 58.84% is land.

The city lies in a quake-prone area and over the years, Seattle has experienced a number of earthquakes. It is known to be the birthplace of the genre of grunge music and has been the home to many of the founders of grunge, namely Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney. The city is an extremely popular tourist spot and features many major attractions, such as the 'Space Needle'. There are many fairgrounds surrounding the Needle and together they are often referred to as the Seattle Center. The Seattle Center hosts many events, such as Bumbershoot, Folklife, and the Bite of Seattle.

Many famed performing arts groups are based in this city, such as the accomplished Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. In fact, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra is arguably the world's most recorded orchestra. Popular, performance venues in the city are the Benaroya Hall, the 5th Avenue Theatre and the McCaw Hill. The city is also famous for being the venue of numerous events and festivals, such as the Seattle International Film Festival, the Northwest Folklife, the Hempfest, the Bite of Seattle and many other festivals.

Seattle has an active sporting culture and is the home of many reputed clubs, such as the football team 'Seattle Seahawks', the baseball team Seattle Mariners, the ice-hockey team Seattle Thunderbirds and the soccer teams Seattle Sounders and Seattle Sounders FC. Some popular sporting venues in the city are Qwest Field, Safeco Field, the Kent Events Center and the KeyArena.
