Artist Biography - Say Anything
|
Bemis attended Camp Ramah in Ojai, California and it proved to be the meeting point for drummer Coby Linder. While he was attending Windward School, a private high school in Los Angeles, he met Evan Span and Michael Levin. After a bad breakup, Bemis picked up a guitar for the first time and wrote the song "Sappy" with the help of Christian singer/songwriter Stephen Speaks and distributed it along with a few other acoustic songs on line and in CD-R form. It was a big hit in the L.A. scene, and Bemis convinced his friends to knock a few songs around for fun. The success subsequently resulted in formation of Sayanything.
The band eventually restricted its lineup to Max on rhythm guitar and vocals, Evan Span on lead guitar, Coby on drums, and Mike Levin on bass. Together they released the Junior Varsity EP which was a four-song album. Although not lot of copies of this album was pressed, dealing with the pressures of everyday life as a high school student. Soon thereafter, Evan quit the band, and Max was in-charged with all guitar duties.
In 2001, the band came up something different, Baseball: An Album By Sayanything, a monstrous debut at 72 minutes in length, to great fan acclaim. Baseballs included superior re-recordings of two of JV's song's, "Dreaming Of Manhattan" and "The Last Great Punk Rock Song." by this time Max was all packed up and ready to move to attend college at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville New York. As a result the band disbanded for the time being. In college, Max began to religiously pour out his thoughts into a four-track recorder in his dorm room; this yielded the aptly titled collection of songs, the Dormroom Demos. Some of the band's best-loved songs never progressed beyond this rough stage.
Presently, the band is busy planning tours for fall 2006. "A Walk Through Hell" and "We Will Erase All Life On Earth But Us" were both recently rerecorded for an upcoming EP. Say Anything's third proper album is tentatively titled Say Anything... In Defense Of The Genre! and is due for a 2007 release.
