Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade, continuing the popularity the early '70s. Just as music changed in those decades, so did Santana. Both the band personnel and the style changed, eventually leaving Carlos Santana the lone remaining original player and taking the group into a direction that was at the same time more contemplative and jazzy.

For the next quarter-century Santana would release hit album after hit album, all thanks to the vision of the band's namesake. Carlos Santana was born on July 20, 1847 in Autlan De Navarro, Mexico. Originally Santana comprised of a collection of family that had moved from Tijuana to San Francisco. The Santana Blues Band became Santana and they released their first recording on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. The album and the live performances attracted Columbia Records and the group would release Santana, a self-titled debut album. By then the group lineup had altered to include Carlos Santana (guitar), Gregg Rolie (keyboards and vocals), David Brown (bass guitar), Michael Shrieve (drums), Jose Areas (percussion) and Michael Carabello. (percussion). These musicians' big break came at Woodstock, which made the album and the band's future. Santana became a huge hit, as did Abraxas (1970) and Santana III (1971). The original Santana band then disbanded. Rolie went on to become a founding member of Journey.

Carlos Santana used the name and a series of changing musicians to continue to tour around the country, releasing several albums. During this period, Carlos took the name "Devadip", bestowed upon him by spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. Many albums followed in the 1970s and 80s, including collaborations with Willie Nelson, Herbie Hancock, Booker T. Jones, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

1991, Santana signed to Polydor Records, which, in April 1992, released the band's 16th studio album, Milagro. The lineup was Carlos, Thompson, Ligertwood, Reyes, Rietvald, and percussionist Karl Perazzo. Polydor was not able to reverse the band's commercial decline, as the album became Santana's first new studio release not to reach the Top 100. The group followed in November 1993 with Sacred Fire - Live in South America, which featured Carlos, Thompson, Ligertwood, Reyes, Perazzo, singer Vorriece Cooper, bass player Myron Dove, and guitarist Jorge Santana, Carlos' brother. The album barely made the charts. In 1994, Carlos, Jorge, and their nephew Carlos Hernandez, released Santana Brothers, another marginal chart entry. The same year, Areas, Carabello, Rolie, and Shrieve formed a band called Abraxas and released the album Abraxas Pool, which did not chart.

The legendary guitarist took to the road in 2009 with a new collective of musicians. This 10-piece all-star band is touring Europe on the Supernatural Santana- A Trip through the Hits. The trip will cross the Atlantic soon enough though. Santana has signed on to play a residency in Las Vegas at The Joint. Santana is still playing a residence in Las Vegas, but this time they are residing at the House of Blues.
