Saint Etienne
Saint Etienne is a British rock band that was formed by former music journalists. The band looked to blend the pop sounds of the 60's with techno tunes of the 90's. The band consists of songwriters Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, and vocalist Sarah Cracknell. The band gave credibility to the genre of indie dance and made it acceptable to audiences in the UK.
Saint Etienne came up in the early 80's when childhood buddies Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs played music in their hometown of Croydon, Surrey, England. Both took up jobs after they completed their schooling. Stanley took up the job of a music journalist but finally decided to get into the process of making music. The duo got together and adopted the name Saint Etienne, and by the beginning of 1990 they had signed a record deal with indie label Heavenly. The band released their first single in 1990, it was a cover song of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart." Moira Lambert of the indie pop band Faith Over Reason lent his vocals to the number.
