December 22, 2010: MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Tickets: Boise State Broncos vs. Utah Utes at Sam Boyd Stadium
On December 22, 2010 loyal students and lifelong Utah Utes and Boise State Broncos fans will descend upon Las Vegas to take their MAACO Bowl Las Vegas tickets to Sam Boyd Stadium. Normally, the bowl game takes a team from the Pac-10 and a team from the Mountain West Conference, but this year the bowl game will take a team from the Western Athletic Conference (Boise St.) and a team from the MWC (Utah).
The Utah Utes, coached by Kyle Whittingham, finished the 2010 college football season 10-2 overall, 7-1 in MWC play, and #19 in the polls. This is quite impressive, as is the second place in the conference. The team won with an offense that used the spread to score 35.6 points a game (18th). Utah threw for 248 and ran for 157 yards a game with QB Jordan Wynn (2,334 yards, 17 TD, 10 INT) and running backs Eddie Wide (683 yards and 11 TD) and Matt Asiata (673 yards and 8 TD). Wynn had a couple targets he favored (WR DeVonte Christopher and Jereme Brooks), but for the most part he was pretty democratic behind center. The prolific Utah offense is coupled with a very good defense that allowed 19.8 points a game (23rd). They will need both sides of the ball to play their best to win this year's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.
For most of the 2010 college the Boise State Broncos and Head Coach Chris Peterson were making plans for a BCS bowl appearance. Then on November 26, 2010 Nevada beat Boise State 34-31 in overtime and the #3 Broncos fell to #10 and were no longer real BCS material. The Broncos loss has been MAACO Bowl Las Vegas' gain. The Broncos come to the game as the #10 team in the nation and help make this perhaps the best bowl game until after New Years Eve.
Boise State score 46.7 points a game, the second most in the nation, and allow 13.6, the fourth fewest. It appears that these stats are at least somewhat inflated by inferior competition in the WAC, but the Broncos cannot control how bad the rest of the WAC is. So the team's 319.4 passing yards (6th) and 200.1 rushing yards (24th) per game are suspect. Lauded quarterback Kellen Moore (3,506 yards, 33 TD, 5 INT, 185 QB Rating), running back Doug Martin (1,113 yards and 11 TD), and WR Titus Young (65 receptions, 1,151 yards, and 9 TD) will try and validate the team's once again in Las Vegas.
