Robert Cray, one of the few active blues artists is endowed with the talent and vision to successfully usher the idiom into the future. He simply passes it off as blues without resorting either to slavish imitation or simply playing rock. He is considered as one of the most expressive vocalists and impressive guitarists on the contemporary rhythm and Blues scene, Robert Cray draws R&B, rock, pop, and jazz with equal insight and authority. He consistently experiments with his two presiding genres, blues and soul. Also a psychedelic rock feel is reflected in some of his works.

In 1974 in north west of America was born "The Robert Cray Band". Cray has received no less than six Grammy nominations along with three awards and has obtained the universal respect and admiration of musicians and audiences. The Robert Cray Band moved from Portland to Seattle and San Francisco in the early 1980's to build up the impressive credentials they are holding today. "Who's Been Talking", the band's debut record released in 1980 and Cray's sound began to spread all over. The band's first national tour saw them share the stage with the "Kings of the Boogie", John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon in 1983. "False Accusations", a 1985 release made Newsweek's Top 10 LP picks and reigned No. 1 on the US and UK charts. In "Show Down!", 1985's release guitarists Johnny Copeland and Albert Collins performed with Cray and the success of it yielded them with a Grammy.

"Strong Persuader", a debut production on the Mercury Label in 1986 took the band to platinum sales which made him win a Grammy. Robert Cray's face were seen on the magazine coves of Rolling Stone. Rock artist Eric Clapton covered Cray's "Bad Influence" on August 1987 and invited him to play on Journeyman and 24 Nights. They together wrote "Old Love", featuring on the Grammy-winning 1992 Unplugged disc. Cray appeared in Tina Turner's "Break every Rule", during the late 80's, the international television special and home video that yielded two duet tracks on Grammy wining 1988 Live In Europe. First three 1990 releases of Robert Cray were "Midnight Stroll" (1990); "I Was Warned"(1992) and "Shame and A Sin" (1993). He has involved himself with other music collaborations during his career with his appearance on John Lee Hooker's hit releases "The Healer", "Mr Lucky" and "Boom Boom". In 1993 he worked alongwith B.B. King on Blues Summit.

By completing their new CD, "Twenty" and notching their 1000th gig with the band's current lineup, The Robert Cray Band kicked off 2005. In the new album Legendary, Grammy winning engineer Don Smith is combined with the band's skills for crafting an intelligent and sophisticated CD which would draw from a diverse pool of influences in order to create a signature sound and varied menu of songs. He is continuing to record and tour and has appeared several times on Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival. Currently on his 2006 world tour he is supporting 'Slowhand'.
