Rihanna was born on February 20, 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados. She wanted to be a singer like Mariah Carey, Brandy, and Beyonce. That led her and two friends starting a group when she was attending Charles F. Broome Memorial School at the age of 15. It did not hurt that the she won Miss Combermere Beauty Pageant, and when the group went in and performed for Jay-Z the other two performers seemed to disappear once she entered the room. Jay-Z would sign her to Def Jam. She had already moved to the United States, staying with record producer Evan Rogers and his wife in Connecticut. The now signed Rihanna began working on material for a debut album. That album, Music of the Sun, was released on August 30, 2005 and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. Though the album charted well, it was a minor commercial success. The R&B/pop singer was a platinum performer in Canada, but only a gold certified act in the UK and the U.S. Rihanna would not embark on a promotional tour for the album, instead waiting for her sophomore album to start putting her name on tickets.

A Girl Like Me had gone platinum and the third album promised to be the undeniable break out album. The artist and the producers worked quickly and released the third record on June 5, 2007.

The album's anthem seemed to be the lead single Umbrella, which was unmber one on the UK charts for 10 weeks in a row. Shut Up and Drive and Don't Stop the Music kept her fans and the radio stations busy. Rihanna was featured on tickets for the Glow in the Dark Tour with Kanye West as she began to heavily promote her album, spending more time on stage and less time in the studio for the first time since she began a truly professional musician.

Rihanna also went on her own headlining tour, called The Good Girl Gone Bad Tour. The tour sold plenty of tickets and the album was re-released with eight new singles on June 17, 2008. Good Girls Gone Bad: Reloaded helped keep the buzz for the state-side double platinum album going. Next came some award recognition. Rihanna won the American Music Award fro Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Artist in 2008.
