Born and brought up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Rick initially wanted to be a drummer but he abandoned the idea soon, when he realized that his big family, in a small house, would not appreciate it. Rick in his official website sates that, music came naturally to him. He first came into the limelight as a member of the jazz-fusion outfit Auracle. The band was formed, while he was studying at the esteemed Eastman School of Music.

The band released two albums after which it disbanded. After the band disbanded, Rick concentrated on songwriting and being a background musician/vocalist. The tune he had composed for REO Speedwagon, 'Here With Me,' became a hit. Once again, as things generally happened by default with Rick right from childhood, Rick crossed over to contemporary jazz by accident. In 1993, Rick came out with his debut solo album âââ€?¬ËÅ"Intimate Secrets'. The follow up album âââ€?¬ËÅ"Night Walk', was released a year later.

Apart from doing solo works, Rick was the touring trumpeter for Sade on the 'Love Deluxe' tour. The association with Sade had a huge impact on Rick's work, his second album almost sounded like Sade's. However the second album did really well and the same year Rick came out with yet another album âââ€?¬ËÅ"Christmas Present'. A year later, in 1995 Rick released the album âââ€?¬ËÅ"Beat Street', which too did quite well. The album remained on the top of the contemporary jazz charts for 13 weeks, and finally it became the No. 1 smooth jazz record of the year. The album got Braun, Gavin's Artist of the Year and Album of the Year award in 1996. His 1996 release âââ€?¬ËÅ"Body and Soul', too became big hit, it remained at the Top 15 on Billboard's contemporary jazz charts for 28 consecutive weeks. This album too fetched âââ€?¬ËÅ"Artist of the Year Award', from Gavin.

Braun's next release 'Full Stride' too toped the charts. His other projects with artists such as Richard Elliot, Brian Bromberg, Chris Standring, Jeff Golub, Peter White and 3rd Force also did well. Braun has made a mark as a producer too, and was honored as 'Best Producer' and 'Best Brass Player' at the Oasis Smooth Jazz Awards in 2000.
Braun has also hit the road with artists such as Rickie Lee Jones, Sade, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Glenn Frey, Natalie Cole, Tom Petty, Crowded House, Phoebe Snow and War.
