Richie Havens is well known for his opening performance at the Woodstock Festival. With his fiery and soulful singing style, he has emerged as one of the recognizable voices in popular music. Whenever he takes up the stage, his performances electrifies the audiences and with his soulful covers of folk songs and pop and his intense rhythm guitar style has made him popular among the crowds wherever he has performed. Some of his famous performances are the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in 1969, the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 -coming full circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The Garden", in 1999.
It was in the Greenwich Village folk music scene that instantly made him star. It was the same music scene that also fostered Joan Baez and bob Dylan. He recorded two albums that was worth of demos for Douglas International in 1965 and 66, although neither of the two tracks was released. By 1967, he signed to Verve Records and joined forces with legendary manager Albert Grossman. He then released his debut album Mixed Bag in the 1967. It featured some standout tracks such as "Handsome Johnny", that was co-written by Richie and future Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr., Follow and the amazing version of Bob Dylan's Just Like A Woman. Something Else Again released in 1968 became one of his first album to hit the Billboard chart and along with went Mixed Bag too in the chartbuster.

In 1969, he opened the Woodstock Festival and received continuous support from the crowd, and was liked by all. He then decided to extemporize a version of Motherless Child to which he added a verse with the word "Freedom". The song was also featured in the Woodstock film and it became one of the international hit. Havens continued with this success with the release of Alarm Clock in the year 1971. It featured one of the most popular rendition of George Harrison's Here Comes The Sun. He has also performed with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey as Peter. Paul and Richie. He then embarked on a tour. In 1983, Richie's first co-production, the two-disc Richard P. Havens, 1983 (Verve 1969), also became popular. He became one of the most popular performer, and his demand increased. He performed in the 966 Newport Folk Festival, the 1967 Monterey Jazz Festival, the 1968 Miami Pop Festival, the 1969 Woodstock Festival, the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival, and the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970. All through out in the 70's and 80's, he continued a non-stop world touring schedule and also released quite a number of albums, such as End Of The Beginning, Mirage, Connections, the Italian-made Common Ground, Simple Things, and Now. In 1992, he performed in the Madison Square Garden appearance at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert, which was highly successful. One of his finest performance held by the press is "Just Like A Woman".
He also featured in a song by Groove Armada called Hands of Time and in 2000, he published a biography, They Can't Hide Us Anymore, that was co-written with Steve Davidowitz. In the 2003, The National Music Council awarded Richie the American Eagle Award. Recently he has released his self-produced album, Grace Of The Sun, where he has composed most of the tracks. He has also been inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on Oct 15, 2006.
