Richard Shindell was born in the year 1960 in Lakehurst in New Jersey. He grew up in Port Washington. He started taking up guitar lessons from a very young age. After spending some time in Baltimore, he moved to New York. In New York he attended the Hobart College and he continued to pursue his musical interests. He gave his first performance at Moravian College where he teamed with John Gorka in the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band. After completing his graduation, he moved into a Zen Buddhist monastery for some time. He had to struggle to become a musician and used to play for coins in the underground Metro train stations in Paris.

He then returned to New York, where he took a hiatus from music. He suddenly got interested in philosophy and religion and got admitted in Union Theological Seminary, since he thought of becoming a pastoral psychotherapist. During his course he used to write songs and finished, what he calls his first keeper song, a melodic, although a bit cryptic. He also composed some odes to the Virgin Mary on the mountain dulcimer called "On A Sea Of Fleur de Lis" and this was followed by many other songs and Shindell realized that songwriting was in his future.
