Regina Spektor was born in Moscow. Since her whole family was interested in music, it was quite natural that she took to music. Her father was a photographer by profession but was an amateur violinist and her mother was a music professor in a Russian conservatory. Regina started learning classical piano from the age of six. She was exposed to the music of rock and roll bands such as The Beatles, Queen and The Moody Blues by her father. Since they were jews by religion, they were forced to leave the country. They moved to New York, when Regina was only nine years old. Her mother then started teaching at a public elementary school in Mount Vernon in New York. Regina resumed her classical training from her piano teacher, Sonia Vargas, who was a professor at the Manhattan School of Music. She was exposed to the work of Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco and other singer-songwriters and this gave her the idea that she could create her own songs too. During her visit to Israel, she attracted attention from the others for the songs she made up while hiking and she realized that she had got he talent for songwriting.

In 2001, Regina finished her graduation in music from the Purchase College in Purchase, New York. She was noticed for her performances in the anti-folk scene in downtown in the New York City, at the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe. She also used to sell her self-produced CDs 11:11 and Songs at such performances. He songs generally take the form of character studies and most of the time are like short stories in song. Most of her songs are based on the scenario drawn out from her imagination. It may range from playful to introspective in character. Her songs shows influences of classical, folk, Russian music and hip hop music and also shows the influence of jazz and blues, and she also draws comparisons to her contemporary Fiona Apple. She ensures that each of her songs has its own musical style instead of developing a distinctive style for her music as a whole. Not only this, she also explores the different timbers of her voice, such as a breathy, angelic high register and a Billie Holiday-like lower register, which she often allows to break into a trumpet-like tone quality
