The band was started in the mid 1990s by a group of music enthusiasts who were all originally from the former Soviet states, except for the drummer. The USP of the band is its danceable, fun motley of classic rock'n'roll and surf music tunes. The earlier songs of the band had been spiced with the strong flavor of traditional Russian melodies. The band composes its own music and sometimes has humorous lyrics and references to subjects dear to the hearts of many Americans, like drinking, girls, food and good times. The band admits to being highly influenced by the music of Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, Chuck Berry, Spice Girls and speeches by Comrade Fidel Castro.

Before starting their own band, Igor Yuzov and Oleg Bernov were members of a Russian folk band called Limpopo. The touring lineup of the band comprises of Bernov and Yuzov with the addition of Gust on drums and either Gorbunov or Shemankova on keyboards. While the band is on the road in Russia and/or Europe, Igor and Oleg are generally joined by other musicians, many locally enrolled, to form a road band. The band tours America extensively a number of times in a year and tries to go to Russia at least once every year. After capturing the hearts of America and Russia, the band set its eyes on Europe. The band is as popular in Europe as it is in the US.

The band has also composed music for movies such as the 1998 film Six-String Samurai and the 2003 film Mail Order Bride. The band also appeared for a very short duration in these two movies. The band has also been featured in numerous television shows such as Melrose Place, Penn & Teller's Sin City Spectacular, Fastlane and many more. In 2005 Red Elvises got an opportunity to play the Live8 concert in Moscow.
