The Rebirth Brass Band is a popular and a highly acclaimed New Orleans brass band. The ensemble was started in 1983 by tuba player Philip Frazier, his brother Keith Frazier and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, along with other musicians at the Joseph S. Clark Sr. High School in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. The band is known for aesthetically mixing New Orleans brass band music, including the New Orleans tradition of second line with funk, jazz, and soul influences.
Artist Biography - Rebirth Brass Band
The band members were pretty young, ranging in age from 15 to 19 when they started off, but soon with great determination mastered old-time brass band swing and strut. The band released its debut album "Here to Stay" in 1984 which was well accepted. While recording the album the group came across Jerry Brock and James Andrews Sr. of Arhoolie Records who became their professional mentors. The follow up album "Feel Like Funkin" It Up' was released in 1989. This album too did quite well.
After releasing albums like Do Watcha Wanna (1991) and Rebirth Kickin' It Live (1991), Ruffins and Rebirth parted ways. The amicable separation took place after Ruffins decided not to go with the band on a trip to Africa. Ruffins later went on to form his own band, the Barbecue Swingers which played more traditional style of New Orleans jazz music. Rebirth's regular Tuesday night gig at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans is one of the most popular events of New Orleans music scene, and has inducted many newly arrived college students into the city's nightlife. The band hits the road regularly and tours all over the US and the Europe.
