Born in 1920 into a Bengali Brahmin family, Shankar was introduced to singing and culture right from childhood. When he was a young child his father and elder brother shifted to Paris. In 1930 he went to Paris to join his brother's dance troupe. While in Paris, Shankar was exposed to both Indian culture as well as Western culture. In 1938, Shankar returned to India to study music. He began studying under Ustad Allauddin Khan. In 1983 Ravi gave his first public performance in India while still undergoing his training. He completed his formal training in 1944, and started working in Bombay, now called Mumbai.
He composed scores for films and ballets. His musical genius got him the post of the music director of All India Radio in the 1950s. Till then the outside world had not heard much about the maestro. This changed after his maiden performance in the Soviet Union in 1953 and then in the West in 1956. He got opportunities to play the Edinburgh Festival as well as major venues such as Royal Festival Hall. As his popularity rose, Shankar was invited to perform at venues that were unusual for a classical musician, like the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival in Monterey, California, with Ustad Allah Rakha on tabla. Shankar along with Harrison organized the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, in an effort to arouse awareness of the growing crisis that was taking place in East Pakistan. Shankar's last working album with Harrison was the 1997 album â€ËÅ"Chants of India.' After the death of his long time friend and colleague Harrison, Shankar and his daughter Anoushka, along with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Billy Preston and others, attended â€ËÅ"Concert for George' in London, England.
Ravi Shankar has composed for numerous films and ballets in India, Canada, Europe, and the United States, including Chappaqua, Charly, Gandhi, and the Apu Trilogy. His composition for the film Gandhi fetched him a nomination for an Academy Award. His album â€ËÅ"Tana Mana', released in 1971, had a unique combination of traditional instruments with electronics. In 2002, the popular father daughter duo played at â€ËÅ"The Concert for George'.
Ravi Shankar has been honored with numerous awards for his work in music. He has received 14 honorary doctorates, the Padma Vibhushan, Desikottam, the Magsaysay Award from Manila and many more awards. In 1999 he was given the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.
